Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) has issued its list of injuries and medical suspensions for the mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters who participated in The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 19 Finale, which took place last Sunday night (July 6, 2014) inside Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
Not surprisingly, Frankie Edgar emerged unscathed. Probably because his opponent, BJ Penn, only landed 13 significant strikes across their 145-pound main event (watch it). "The Prodigy," however, was not so lucky, and drew a 60-day sit for damage sustained in "Sin City."
A formality in the wake of his recent retirement.
Elsewhere on the card, a couple of TUF guys found themselves faced with potential six-month suspensions. Eddie Gordon may have tweaked his shoulder by playing whack-a-mole with Dhiego Lima's face, while Matt Van Buren got slapped with 180 days for well, getting slapped.
Hard.
Here is the complete list of TUF 19 Finale injuries and corresponding medical suspensions:
BJ Penn: Suspended 60 days (45 days no contact) for left eye laceration.
Matt Van Buren: Suspended 180 days for possible orbital fracture pending clearance by ophthalmologist. Minimum suspension 45 days (30 days no contact).
Eddie Gordon: Suspended 180 days for possible shoulder injury pending clearance by doctor.
Dhiego Lima: Suspended 45 days (30 days no contact) for precautionary reasons.
Justin Scoggins: Suspended 30 days (21 days no contact) for precautionary reasons.
Guto Inoncente: Suspended 45 days (30 days no contact) for facial lacerations.
Jesse Ronson: Suspended 30 days (21 days no contact) for precautionary reasons.
Jumabieke Tuerxun: Suspended 30 days (21 days no contact) for precautionary reasons.
Juan Manuel Puig: Suspended 45 days (30 days no contact) for precautionary reasons.
Patrick Walsh: Suspended 30 days (21 days no contact) for scalp laceration.
Keith Berish: Suspended 180 days for possible left knee injury pending clearance by orthopedic doctor.
Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases. In addition, not all injuries are recorded during the post-fight examination and often times surface in follow-up tests.
