The UConn Huskies athletics department has won three women's and two men's NCAA Basketball Tournaments and saw the football team play in the 2011 Fiesta Bowl during Jeff Hathaway's tenure as athletic director. But, according to TheDay.com, Hathaway and university president Susan Herbst are negotiating a buyout to end his time with the school.
Hathaway's performance as athletic director has come under inquiry after an investigation raised questions over his ability to fulfill his duties. The two major areas that he was found lacking in were fundraising and compliance. In 2011, basketball coach Jim Calhoun was found to have committed recruiting violations in 2008, received a short suspension for the 2011-12 season and saw his team placed on probation. Compliance will be a significant area for the new hire to focus on.
There are no replacements candidates as of now, but Hathaway will likely last in his position for a few more weeks. However, he is expected to leave before the start of classes in September.
Hathaway came to UConn in 2003 after serving as Colorado State's director of athletics. Before that he was an associate AD for the Huskies.
