As part of a major match-fixing investigation by authorities in Turkey, nearly 60 people suspected to be involved with fixing games were detained by police on Monday. As police launched raids of club facilities in 15 provinces, various personnel suspected to be involved with the scandal, including chairmen, players, managers and even trainers were detained. Among that group is Aziz Yildrim, the chairman of Turkish giants Fenerbahce, along with two board members and two unnamed Fenerbahce players. Two Fenerbahce matches from the 2010-11 season - both of which they won - are believed to be part of the investigation.
If this sounds vaguely familiar, it's probably because almost the exact same thing happened last year. The big difference between that investigation from 2010 and this one is how directly involved some big names and big clubs appear to be. This story is still very much a developing one, so it is not yet known whether or not Yildrim and others will end up facing criminal charges in court, though that is believed to be a possibility.
