After Gomes turned in an occasionally great, but largely inconsistent season for Tottenham Hotspur, the North London club has decided to bring in a more consistent and experienced goalkeeper, signing 40-year-old Brad Friedel on a free transfer from Aston Villa. Friedel will not give Tottenham what Gomes provides in pure athleticism or shot-stopping ability at this late stage of his career, but he is an incredibly intelligent and consistent player who is proven as one of the least error-prone goalkeepers in the world.
Gomes' brilliant saves have kept Tottenham in matches they didn't belong in over the last two years, but his errors have also caused them to drop important matches. As a result, Harry Redknapp has opted for a more consistent and reliable option, and it's hard to blame him.
While still on the books at Spurs for the moment, Gomes is believed to be on his way out of North London. His former club, PSV Eindhoven, are the team most often linked to his services, though nothing is anywhere near confirmed at this point.
