The Pirates are again within one game of .500, thanks to recent strong performances by starting pitchers Charlie Morton and Jeff Karstens. On Saturday it was Kevin Correia who stepped up, and the Bucs won 6-2.
Correia allowed consecutive doubles by Andy Dirks, Miguel Cabrera and Brennan Boesch in the fourth inning to allow the Tigers to score to runs, but otherwise made his way through 6.2 strong innings, striking out four and walking none.
The Bucs scored three runs in the sixth on an RBI double by Garrett Jones and two sacrifice flies. In the seventh, Matt Diaz hit a two-run single, then got caught in a rundown that allowed Jose Tabata to score the final run of the game.
Andrew McCutchen went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Tabata, Ryan Doumit and Ronny Cedeno all had two hits each.
Max Scherzer took the loss for the Tigers despite striking out seven batters and walking none in 5.2 innings
The Pirates' record now stands at 22-23, and they'll attempt to get back to .500 by completing a sweep against the Tigers on Sunday.
