St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - CC Sabathia lost a no-hitter with two outs in the eighth on Kelly Shoppach's line-drive single to left in a 10-0 Yankees win over the Rays at Tropicana Field.
Sabathia's (1-0) line read one hit, two walks and five strikeouts over 7 2/3 innings. He was pulled after the hit from his former battery mate in Cleveland after 111 pitches, 69 of those strikes.
Sabathia was bidding for the first Yankee no-hitter since David Cone's perfect game against Montreal on July 18, 1999. The last Yankee lefty to toss one was another perfect game effort, this one from David Wells on May 17, 1998 against Minnesota.
Robinson Cano had a two-run homer and RBI single for New York, which lost the opener of this three-game series, 9-3, on Friday. Brett Gardner recorded two hits, two RBI, two runs scored and walked in the win.
Mark Teixeira snapped an 0-for-17 slump to begin the season -- the longest drought of his career -- with an RBI double in the fifth and ended 3-for-4, scored twice and walked.
Francisco Cervelli added a two-run double and Curtis Granderson provided two hits and an RBI. Alex Rodriguez got his 1,000th hit as a Yankee -- the 39th player in team history to do so.
Wade Davis (0-1) was charged with four runs on seven hits and four walks in a six-inning start for Tampa Bay, which had won three of its first four games to start the season. The Rays bullpen was responsible for six earned runs on seven Yankee hits and walked four.
Sabathia rolled into the sixth with just a walk to Evan Longoria leading off the prior inning representing the Rays lone baserunner to that point. Teixeira helped preserve the no-no with a diving stab to his left on a Jason Bartlettline drive for the final out of the inning.
However, the big southpaw ran into a spot of trouble in the seventh. Carl Crawford drew a leadoff walk and Ben Zobrist hit a chopper back to the mound. Sabathia fielded it cleanly, but his throw to second pulled Cano off the bag. Crawford, though, overslid the bag and was tagged for the first out.
Longoria was caught looking at strike three and a second defensive gem kept the no-hitter intact moving to the eighth, as Rodriguez made a diving stop on a hot smash down the third-base line by B.J. Upton.
With 102 pitches, Sabathia was delayed coming out for the bottom half of the eighth as New York tacked on four runs to make it an 8-0 game. Granderson sliced a base hit to left with the bags full to score one and a fielder's choice RBI from Gardner made it a six-run difference.
Cervelli then took a double the opposite way over the head of Gabe Kapler in right to clear the bases.
Sabathia had another close call to start the bottom half, as Willy Aybar's chopper back to the mound deflected off his hand. Cano charged the slowed ball and beat Aybar to the bag with his throw, and Pat Burrell followed with a fly out.
Shoppach then took the second pitch he saw and drove it into shallow left to end the drama, and David Robertson came on to finish out the inning.
New York's offense continued to roll in the ninth as Cano knocked in Nick Johnson with a base hit and Gardner drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run.
New York broke a scoreless game in the fourth when Teixeira walked and Cano swatted a 1-1 fastball out to right-center for his second home run of the year.
The Yankees doubled their advantage an inning later on Derek Jeter's RBI single and Teixeira's first base hit of the season -- a run-scoring double down the right-field line.
Gardner opened with a single and moved up on a sacrifice, then chugged home on a Jeter rip to center. Teixeira ended an agonizing slump two batters later to make it a 4-0 game.
Granderson nearly manufactured a fifth run for New York if not for a strong throw by Crawford and a text-book block of the plate by Shoppach. Granderson got on with a walk, stole second and rounded third on Gardner's hit to left but was tripped up Shoppach with a leg-block of the plate to end the top of the sixth.
Sabathia was charged with five runs in 5 1/3 innings of a no-decision to the Red Sox in New York's season-opener on Sunday. He improved to 8-3 lifetime against the Rays. The former AL Cy Young winner came in 0-3 in his last six starts at Tropicana Field...Granderson and Gardner stole their second and third bases of the season, respectively, while Rodriguez finished 2-for-4...Zobrist had the only other Tampa Bay hit -- a double in the ninth...New York took 11 of the 18 meetings between the clubs last season, including five of the nine matchups at the Trop.
