The Houston Astros weren't expected to have a real great 2010 season by any means, but things are just going from bad to worse in a hurry. Not only did the Astros get swept in their season-opening home series against the Giants; now they've had to place relief sensation Sammy Gervacio on the disabled list with a strained posterior cuff.
Gervacio appeared to hurt his shoulder on a play where he fielded a ball on the infield and awkwardly threw to third, trying to get the lead runner. He stayed in the game after that, but left shortly after.
The 25 year old Gervacio, who struck out 25 batters in 21 big league innings a year ago, made a name for himself with an unusual delivery and a sharp, unhittable repertoire. He was supposed to fill a big role in Houston's bullpen this summer, but this injury represents a setback, and one that could prove to be significant. If the righty Gervacio has to miss a lot of time, the Astros will only be left with one fewer bright spot in what's already looking to be a miserable year.
26 year old righty Wilton Lopez has been called up to take Gervacio's place on the roster. Read more on this story at The Crawfish Boxes.
