A fourth bout between UFC Hall of Famers Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture is currently being planned for UFC 116 on July 3.
A source close to the promotion informed Heavy.com of the news on Tuesday afternoon.
The bout would serve as the co-main event of the blockbuster card that is expected to be headlined by a UFC heavyweight title bout between Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin.
The series between the two men sits at 2-1 in favor of Liddell who won the last two meetings by stoppage.
The only reason to make this fight would be a feeling on the UFC's part that it gives both men an "activity fight" while not risking their ability to make money in putting over a new star. Randy and Chuck can fight and the winner can be used in a main event against a guy like Jon Jones (a young stud who would beat either man right now) while the loser would still have value putting over another potential star, or being a rebound fight for the loser of the Shogun Rua / Lyoto Machida match-up.
It's a fight that somewhat exists "in a bubble." There isn't a ton of promotional value at risk since there is a history and ton of star power that overrides it.
Still, I'd really love to not be talking so much about fights such as Chuck/Randy IV and Chuck/Tito III.
Current rumored card:
- Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin
- Chuck Liddell vs. Randy Couture
- Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Wanderlei Silva
- Stephan Bonnar vs. Krzysztof Soszynski
