Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Eric Nystrom's second-period goal proved to be the difference, as the Calgary Flames staved off a late San Jose rally to post a 4-3 win over the Sharks at Pengrowth Saddledome.
Jarome Iginla, Daymond Langkow and Nigel Dawes also tallied for the Flames, who were clobbered, 9-1, the last time these clubs met on January 18 in San Jose.
With the win, Calgary temporarily moved one point ahead of Detroit for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Red Wings are visiting Edmonton on Friday.
Mikael Backlund and Jamal Mayers each collected two assists in the win, while Flames goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff made 25 saves.
Manny Malhotra and Dan Boyle scored in the third to pull the Sharks to within a goal.
Dany Heatley had the other goal for San Jose, which has lost four in a row -- all in regulation -- on its current six-game road trip. The Sharks, who are winless in five straight overall, have watched their once-sizeable cushion in the Pacific Division standings whittled to a precarious three points by the red-hot Phoenix Coyotes, winners in each of their last seven games.
Evgeni Nabokov stopped 20 shots.
