Finland's 3-0 defeat at the hands of Sweden didn't prevent them from an automatic berth in the quarterfinals. Joni Pitkanen's one-game suspension for a head-hunting hit on Patric Hornqvis, however, will present an obstacle for the Finns moving forward.
With the Swedes controlling the game, Pitkanen's emotions got the better of him in the second period and he received a game-misconduct for his check. Hornqvist was woozy and required assistance from trainers to leave the ice. He did not return.
Janne Niskala, who has been Finland's seventh defenseman, will see more minutes in Pitkanen's absence.
"He's a key part on the power play and obviously on the breakouts he's such a good skater and mobile defenseman and sees the ice well," defenseman Sami Salo said. "Obviously it's a big loss but it opens up a spot for Niskala."
