Finland takes another step towards the quarterfinals with a 5-0 win over Germany on Friday night. This win gives Finland the lead in Group C with six points and a goal differential of nine goals. This leads to a showdown between Group C powerhouses Finland and Sweden on Sunday.
Kimmo Timonen led Finland with two goals while Tuomo Ruutu, Jarkko Ruutu, and Joni Pitkanen were the other goal scorers. Niklas Backstrom got the shutout stopping all 24 shots.
Finland outshot Germany 35-24 and converted four of six powerplays while Germany was blanked on three powerplay chances. Jochen Hecht led Germany in shots with five followed by Christian Ehrhoff and Marcel Muller with three shots a piece.
Germany will take on Belarus on Saturday to try and secure their first points in the Olympics while Finland will take on Sweden on Sunday.
