In a not too surprising move, the Giants have cut middle linebacker Antonio Pierce, according to the Newark Star-Ledger. Pierce, who spent five seasons with the Giants, had an off year in an injury-shortened 2009, sitting out the final month due to a bulging disk. The former defensive captain of the Giants had one year remaining on his deal.
It is not immediately clear who the Giants will target to replace Pierce. Early fan speculation has centered on middle linebacker Karlos Dansby of the Cardinals, who figures to be one of the marquee names on the free agent market this offseason. Another key factor will be whether 2010 is an uncapped season, as seems increasingly likely.
As for Pierce, the 32 year-old told the Newark Star-Ledger that he is "doing great, feeling great. Looking forward to endless possibilities." Well, almost endless: he won't be playing for the Giants anymore.
