A few weeks ago, Billy Gillispie's spectacular fall from grace continued--from a rising star and head of the fabled Kentucky basketball program, to an unemployed ex-coach, suing that same school--when he was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol. At the time, it was unfortunate news, but sadly, not terribly surprising.
From the AP's account three weeks ago:
The arrest marks at least the third time Gillispie has been accused of driving under the influence. In 1999, Gillispie was arrested on two charges: driving while intoxicated and improper use of a lane in Tulsa, Okla., where he was an assistant coach under Bill Self.He eventually pleaded guilty to a charge of reckless driving. The other charges were dismissed. In 2003, in his first year as head coach at the University of Texas-El Paso, he was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. The charges eventually were dismissed after a specially appointed prosecutor decided that there was not enough evidence to suggest that Gillispie was drunk. The coach, then 43, maintained his innocence through that process.
Now, though, it seems Gillispie may be on the right track. After years of rumored troubles with alcohol, the former Kentucky coach will enter a rehab facility for alcohol abuse, according to CBSsports.com. According to Texas outlets, he will enter the Jonh Lucas After Care Rehab Facility, which is named for its director, John Lucas, himself a former coach and victim of alcohol and drug abuse. The Lucas Facility is also the same facility currently treating Miami Heat rookie Michael Beasley for his drug addiction, and has helped numerous basketball luminaries overcome addiction in the past.
Here's to hoping Gillispie's able to find the help he needs.
