The Pirates have sent Erik Kratz back to Indianapolis to make way for Ryan Doumit, who had been on the DL. Kratz just came up a couple of weeks ago to make his major league debut at the age of 30; that was fun while it lasted, I suppose. Doumit will act as Chris Snyder’s backup, and will also pick up time in right field and perhaps at first base. As I wrote at Bucs Dugout, I’m not a big fan of having Doumit play anywhere other than catcher or pinch-hitter. True, he’s a dreadful defensive catcher, and acquiring Snyder to replace him as a starter was a good move, but he appears to be a bad defensive first baseman too, and the Pirates already have young starters at all three outfield positions.
