Not to lose sight of the real story here, which is the tragic murder of an innocent 22-year-old woman, but there is the issue of what will happen to the male and female UVA lacrosse teams this season.
Both teams are among the best in the country, with the men currently ranked No. 1 and the women at No. 4. Their regular seasons have concluded, and postseason play in the NCAA Tournament is set to begin in the coming weeks. So, in the light of the this tragedy and the fallout to come, will both teams continue with their season?
There was an early rumor on Twitter, apparently started by a now-deleted tweet from ESPN’s Quint Kessenich, that UVA had cancelled lacrosse for the remainder of the season. But according to the university, that is false, and they are still deciding how to proceed. Apparently, the respective coaches will meet with their players, with the women’s squad expected to gather at 6 p.m. Monday evening.
We’ll keep you updated as news emerges.
