The 32nd pick is in and SB Nation's Saints community, Canal Street Chronicles, has selected...
Florida DE Carlos Dunlap
The Gators are known for producing talented pass rushers over the years, including the Saints own Bobby McCray, and the incredibly athletic Dunlap is no different. Dunlap's 18.5 sacks over his last two seasons with the Gators are exactly what the Saints hope to add to their pass rush next year. He's extremely athletic with huge potential but also comes with a few character and work ethic concerns. The classic high risk/high reward prospect.
Dunlap is a boom or bust player. On paper, he certainly looks the part but had a career of inconsistency. On the field, he has the frame of a basketball player, and that doesn't always translate well to the pros.
From SB Nation's Alligator Army, a Florida Gators blog:
After finally ending the whispers of his immaturity, Dunlap was hauled in for a DUI the week of the SEC Championship Game. Urban Meyer called it out of character for Dunlap and Dunlap has expressed remorse. But, it fits into a pattern of a player who didn't take practice and workouts seriously until his sophomore season.
I included that last quote from SB Nation's Alligator Army because I think it's important to keep in mind. Saints coach Sean Payton is a Bill Parcells disciple. Parcells has on occasion talked about not wanting "thugs and hoodlums" on his team. Now, I'm not that's Dunlap but his actions aren't something that's viewed upon fondly in the Parcells coaching tree.
I think the physical talent is there -- and maybe he's a good value at this point -- but I'm not so sure he would be the Saints best bet.
