Holland's Sven Kramer, a two-time medalist in Turin, took home his first Olympic gold medal Saturday afternoon, winning the men's 5000 m with an OR time of 6:14:60. Immediately after his win became official, Kramer took off across the ice, hopped two barriers and climbed into the stands to share hugs with his family in a moment that reminds that sometimes, sports can still be sincere and heartwarming. Kramer entered the Games as the reigning world champioin and record holder in the 5000 m, as well as the 10,000 m (which is set for Feb. 23).
Seung-Hoon Lee of Korea won the silver and Russia's Ivan Skobrev claimed bronze.
American Chad Hedrick, the 2006 gold medalist in the event, finished 11th, over 12 seconds behind Kramer. Countrymen Shani Davis and Trevor Masrsicano finished 12th and 14th, respectively.
